We’re sure testifying before Congress, especially a congress controlled by the other side from your boss, has got to be nerve-racking.  The whole world is watching, and the last thing you want to do is screw it up.  They’re going to look for every opening, every mistake, so you have to be really, really prepared.

Unless you’re Department of Homeland Security official Kelli Ann Burriesci.

Burriesci showed up before Congress with absolutely nothing. After all, it’s not like it’s really hard to know that some of this information would be asked. How could she not have the information?

Seriously, Burriesci looked like a political punching bag up there. Maybe the term “sacrificial lamb” is more appropriate, since she looks to be staked out as an offering for congress to devour.  Either way, her preparation was laughable.

Then again, maybe Burriesci wasn’t really in a position to know that information.  Yes, the video mentions her job title, but what exactly was that again?  Try U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Policy (PLCY) Screening Coordination Office Deputy Assistant Secretary.  Yeah, she should probably have known some of that information.  After all, she was called on to testify before Congress, right?

In fairness to Burriesci, she did provide a fair amount of information to the committee regarding the Visa Waiver Program.  Unfortunately, she really should have known questions would be asked about the number of Syrian refugees.

If the person in charge of screening the refugees doesn’t even know how many refugees there are, that’s not likely to instill confidence for those concerned with the program.  Like the committee members said, it’s pretty basic information.  If she doesn’t have that, then how are these security checks being done?  At this point, we can’t help but wonder if they ask each person wanting to come to the US if they’re a terrorist, and arrest anyone who says yes and that’s about it. Maybe better to demand they draw Mohammed.
